Family Driving At Its Best: The BMW X7

Typically, when we think of what we need from a family vehicle, robust performance and a treasure trove of comfort features aren't usually at the top of the list. The BMW X7 aims to change that thought process permanently, all while still accommodating the practicalities you need to get your family to school, soccer practice, and wherever else life takes you.

What's new for the BMW X7?

The BMW X7 debuted as a new model in 2019, and in 2020 it returned a lot of the same features that made it such a success in its first year. The main difference this year is an all-new performance-focused trim level, the M50i. The M50i is equipped with a robust V8 engine, larger brakes and wheels, an upgraded differential, and a sport-tuned exhaust.

There's no doubting BMW's ability to capture the attention of many an on-looker around Paterson or Little Falls as one of their vehicles drives by, and the BMW X7 is no different. Bold lines and a wide stance give off a subtle feeling of aggression that's perfectly balanced with sophistication. Officially, the BMW X7 is classified as a full-size SUV. It features three rows that accommodate up to seven passengers, and its interior is constructed from premium materials that are always easy on the eyes.

Cargo capacity is also a strength of the BMW X7, as it can be leveraged in one of three ways. Behind the third row, owners and lessees will find 12.8 cubic feet of space. This number becomes 48.6 cubic feet when you fold down the third row and then 90.4 when taking away the second row. Suffice it to say, the BMW X7 is well-equipped to handle the needs of drivers around Totowa and Caldwell both now and well into the future.

Under the hood, the BMW X7 has a trio of engine options to choose from. The base-level xDrive40i model features a 3.0-liter turbo-six engine that produces a power output of 335 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque alongside a fuel economy of 20 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway.

Moving up to the xDrive50i model gets you a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 that improves the power output to 456 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. Meanwhile, if you go for the all-new performance-focused M50i, you get an enhanced version of this same twin-turbo V8 that gets 523 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque.

As you would expect from any family vehicle worth its salt, luxury or otherwise, the BMW X7 comes loaded with safety features. Standard options include a high-resolution rearview camera, adaptive headlights with automatic high beams, a driver drowsiness monitor, and parking sensors in both the front and the rear of the SAV. BMW's Active Driving Assist package is also standard, and it includes blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and adaptive cruise control.

The 2020 BMW X7 is loaded with intuitive technology that's quick and easy to use at any point during your drive. The hub of it all is the iDrive infotainment system that is navigated through a tablet-like 12.3-inch touchscreen. You'll have access to Bluetooth, HD radio, satellite radio, and smartphone compatibility via Apple CarPlay. A ten-speaker sound system and a trio of fast-charging USB ports round out the rest of the package.
